High temperatures will boost retail sales

by Kay Murchie

Earlier this month, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed a strong performance on the High Street for the month of May – boosted by the sales of televisions in the build-up to the World Cup tournament.
However, England’s early exit from the World Cup coincided with a heatwave and according to retail analysts, sales of food and summer clothes will be high as a result.
A barbecue summer would also be a boost for the High Street with a high volume of garden equipment being sold.
However, many shops would have hoped that England would have reached the quarter finals at least, as many will now find they have a surplus of World Cup-related merchandise.
Retail sales in May were boosted by television sales after some electrical retailers offered discounts and cash back for each goal England scored.
However, now the tournament is over - for England at least - Maureen Hinton, lead analyst at Verdict Research, said that soaring temperatures will boost the sector.
Garden centres and outdoor furniture retailers will particularly benefit from the sunshine, said Ms Hinton.
