BT strike ballot scrapped over “technical breaches”
The union which represents BT workers has announced a strike ballot has been scrapped due to a legal issue.
The vote for strike action came as senior executives were awarded huge bonuses which angered staff.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said it was balloting members in support of a 5% pay rise after what it called a period of wage freezes and a series of layoffs.
The CWU was scheduled to announce the ballot result yesterday, which could have seen the first industrial action at BT since 1987.
The CWU was said to be “disappointed” and said: “The ballot has been cancelled following legal advice which clearly outlined that under the notoriously restrictive trade union laws in the UK certain technical breaches would potentially invalidate the ballot.
“CWU has today received an offer from BT to meet for further negotiations and the union will take up that offer whilst taking all necessary steps to allow a re-ballot as soon as practically possible if negotiations are unsuccessful.”
However, the union said it plans to proceed with the necessary steps to allow a re-ballot to take place.
