The British Retail Consortium (BRC) today said UK retail sales rose in June due to the hot weather in the latter part of the month.

According to the BRC, like-for-like sales rose 1.2% in June compared with the same month a year ago, and were up 0.8% from May - the best reading since March.

Sales of televisions boosted sales, as did DIY and leisure sales.

Total sales, which include new floorspace, grew 3.4% on year - up from 3% in May - also the best level since March.

The BRC said it was encouraged by the figures. Stephen Robertson, BRC’s director general, said: “Another good month’s growth - the second highest of the year. Sunny weather and early clearance sales boosted clothing and outdoor goods. The World Cup buoyed demand for televisions.
