Further strikes looming as BA cabin crew reject latest offer

There are fresh concerns for more strikes at British Airways (BA) after cabin crew yet again rejected the airline’s offer to end their bitter row over cost-cutting measures.

However, there was a low turnout for ballot, which “encouraged” the airline with less than half of the 11,000 members balloted by the Unite union casting a vote to end the long-running dispute.

The union said 3,419 cabin crew members voted against BA’s deal while 1,686 were willing to accept it.

BA said: “We are encouraged by the result of this ballot which shows that 73% of our cabin crew did not reject our offer.”

It added: “With only around a quarter of our cabin crew voting against the deal, support for Unite is ebbing away.

“We would urge them to come back to the table to sign the agreement and end the dispute.”

The airline’s offer included a 2.9% pay rise next year and a 3% pay increase the following year.

So far, cabin crew members have held 22 days of strikes after being involved in a long-running dispute with the airline over cost-cutting measures, which include a pay freeze, a switch to part-time working for thousands of staff, as well as removing travel perks, which were stripped from members during the strike in March.

The airline has already lost £150 million in 2010 from previous strikes this year.
