August rise in house sales
The number of UK homes changing hands showed a slight increase in August, with the latest Agency Express Property Activity Index showing sales rising by 0.9% compared to July, reversing two previous monthly declines.
The annual gain stood at 6.2% but compared to two years ago, August saw sales rocket by 50.7%.
Regional hot-spots were as follows: in Wales sales were up 28.5%; East Midlands up 14.7% and Yorkshire up 10.7%.
Turning to cities, Leicester took the lead with sales rising 71.3% in August; Southampton followed on with a 40% rise and then Edinburgh with an increase of 38.1%.
Agency Express, which claims to be the UK’s largest “For Sale” board management contractor, also noted a 0.5% rise in the number of properties put up for sale last month.
The firm therefore suggests that consumer confidence is proving resilient to government cuts and continuing economic uncertainty.
Managing director, Stephen Watson, comments: “Despite being in unchartered waters regarding the Government’s austerity measures and talk of a double-dip recession, I believe consumers have taken stock of the overall economic situation and have decided that the property market is still holding relatively firm with steady demand and genuine opportunities.”
