The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed UK unemployment dipped in the three months to July.

The ONS said unemployment fell by 8,000 in the three month period to 2.47 million.

The latest figures means the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.8%, said the ONS. This compares with 10% in the euro zone and 9.6% in the US.

In the meantime, however, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) rose by 2,300 in August to 1.47 million, according to the ONS.

This represented the first monthly increase since January 2010 and suggests the economic recovery may be faltering, according to analysts.

Following today’s unemployment news, sterling dipped more than 0.1% against the dollar to trade at $1.5497.
