Alliance Boots cutting workforce to reduce costs

Healthcare giant Alliance Boots has announced plans to reduce its headcount in order to save more than £50 million.

The company said it will shed 900 non-store jobs by 2013 - with the majority of the cuts in Nottingham - its main UK base.

They cuts will be implemented in the company’s health and beauty business, and related contract manufacturing activities.

The company was quick to point out though that the job losses amounted to less than one tenth of the its non-store workforce.

However, the GMB union described the announcement as “bad news“, suggesting it will hold talks with the company to find out “what is behind this decision.”

Alliance Boots has a total workforce of 115,000 - including 70,000 in the UK. It was established in 2006 via a merger of high street pharmacist Boots Group and retail pharmacy group Alliance UniChem.
