Supermarket giant, Morrisons has reported a modest increase in third quarter sales.

The grocer, which is Britain’s fourth largest, said like-for-like sales grew 1.3% in the 13 weeks to 31 October - representing a rise of 1% from the second quarter.

Meanwhile, total sales in the third quarter were up by 2.8% and 4.7% higher when petrol forecourt sales were included.

The company said the performance was “in line with expectations”, particularly in view of the current economic climate.

The Bradford-based retailer is outperforming its competitors and recent industry data showed it to be the fastest-growing of Britain’s top four supermarkets

It has now recovered from its disastrous £3 billion acquisition of rival Safeway in 2004 and it has attracted consumers with its combination of low prices and fresh food counters.
