Euro zone ministers to meet in Brussels today

Euro zone finance ministers are heading to Brussels today to discuss Ireland’s debt crisis, which poses a risk to the 16-nation bloc.

Ireland’s Government continues to reject claims that it is seeking emergency financial support via the EU rescue fund.

However, the Irish Government has said it is in talks with European partners about how to provide stability for its banks.

Meanwhile, Jean Claude-Juncker, Luxembourg Prime Minister, who chairs today’s talks in Brussels, said Ireland was not even close to asking for a Greek-style bailout.

However, speculation is mounting that Portugal may be forced to seek to an emergency rescue.

Portuguese Finance Minister, Fernando Teixeira dos Santos, yesterday admitted to the Financial Times it was likely that the country would have to seek emergency due to the fall out from concerns over Ireland’s finances, which could create a contagion effect.
