The ONS said unemployment grew by 35,000 in the three month period to just over 2.5 million.

The latest figures takes the unemployment rate to an unexpected 7.9% - for the first time in six months.

In the meantime, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) fell in November, by 1,200 to 1.46 million, the ONS said.

Meanwhile, wage growth improved marginally but remains well below inflation, according to the ONS.

Following the release of the data, sterling gained versus the US dollar to $1.5724.
