It has been revealed that the US Government is to sue oil giant BP and eight other companies in connection with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The companies named in the lawsuit are BP Exploration and Production Inc, Anadarko Exploration & Production LP, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, Triton Asset Leasing GMBH, Transocean Holdings LLC, Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc, Transocean Deepwater Inc and insurer QBE Underwriting Ltd/Lloyd’s Syndicate 1036.

The major oil slick resulted in the worst environmental disaster in US history

The catastrophe happened after an explosion on BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig on 20 April, which took the lives of 11 people. The explosion led to thousands of barrels of oil leaking from the damaged well, which took months to seal.

Meanwhile, the lawsuit asks that they be held liable without limitation for all clean-up and damage costs.

The lawsuit charges the companies under the US Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act, seeking compensation for damage caused to natural resources, including “salt marshes, sandy beaches, and mangroves” as well as “birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals” that were affected.
