The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed UK unemployment rose in the three months to January.

The ONS said unemployment grew by 27,000 in the three month period to 2.529 million.

The latest figures means the unemployment rate has risen from 7.9% in January to 8% in February - a 10-month high.

In the meantime, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) fell in February, by 10,200 to 1.45 million – analysts had expected a rise of 1,000.

Meanwhile, the ONS also said unemployment among 18 to 24-year-olds rose to 18.3% of the workforce - representing the highest level since records began.

Unemployment is expected to rise further as the Coalition Government’s tough austerity measures will see more than 300,000 public sector staff lose their jobs over the next four years.
