Airports operator BAA has today reported a marginal rise in passenger numbers at its six British airports in March.

BAA, which is majority owned by Spain’s Ferrovial, said 8.27 million passengers flew from its UK airports during the month, compared with 8.19 million in the same month a year ago.

Heathrow, which is the UK’s main airport, experienced a 2.3% rise in passenger numbers, serving 5.33 million travellers.

Meanwhile, BAA’s Scottish airports reported a 5.8% rise but Stansted airport saw a drop of 7.4%, while Southampton fell 8.7%.

BAA’s chief executive, Colin Matthews, comments: “The valuable trading connections to India and mainland China continue to see strong growth (from Heathrow), which suggests improving economic circumstances and the increasing importance of these economies.”
