UK unemployment rate falls further to 7.7%

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed UK unemployment fell further in the three months to March.

The ONS said unemployment fell by 36,000 in the three month period to 2.46 million.

The latest figures means the unemployment rate has fallen to 7.7% from 7.8% in February.

In the meantime, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) rose in April, by 12,400 to 1.47 million, said the ONS. This represented the fastest pace since January 2010.

However, unemployment is expected to rise in the coming months as the Coalition Government’s tough austerity measures will see more than 300,000 public sector staff lose their jobs over the next four years.

In comparison, unemployment in the US stands at 9%, Japan’s unemployment rate is 4.6%, while in the euro zone, it is 9.9%.
