ONS: Retail sales rise in April

The long bank holiday weekends and sunny weather has led to a rise in retail sales for the month of April, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today.

The ONS said retail sales grew 1.12% last month due to the late Easter holidays, hot weather and Royal Wedding, with clothing, footwear and food selling well.

The rise represented the biggest for April since 2002.

However, according to analysts, the rise is a one-off as consumer spending remains weak.

Last week, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) also said that the hot weather and bank holiday weekends led to an increase in retail sales.
