Spanish banking giant Santander has announced it will return all of its call centres to the UK from India after complaints from its customers.

It will create 500 jobs as part of the process and it is the latest in a series of customer service focus initiatives from the bank.

Santander has a major UK presence after acquiring Abbey for £9.5 billion back in 2004.

In July 2008, it rescued troubled mortgage lender, Alliance & Leicester, and a few months later, it took ownership of Bradford & Bingley’s savings business and branch network.

Commenting on the announcement, Ana Botin, chief executive, said: “This is what our customers have told us is the most important factor in terms of the satisfaction with the bank, and we have listened to them and decided to bring all of our retail call centres back from India.”

The news comes just days after telecommunications company, New Call Telecom, said it would move one of its call centres from India to Lancashire, which will create 100 jobs.
