The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed UK unemployment fell further in the three months to May.

The ONS said unemployment fell by 26,000 in the three month period to 2.45 million.

The latest figures means the unemployment rate remained flat at 7.7%.

However, the number of Britons claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) surged in June, by 24,500, to 1.52 million – the biggest rise for two years, said the ONS.

In comparison, unemployment in the US stands at 9.2%, Japan’s unemployment rate is 4.7%, while in the euro zone, it is 9.9%.

The figures come on the same day the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revised its unemployment forecast.

It is now expecting unemployment to peak at 2.7 million next year - down from an earlier estimation of 3 million.
