UN pitches P2.27-billion relief for typhoons’ victims
Seeing the need for an urgent relief and early recovery of those affected by the series of typhoons, the United Nations (UN), upon the request of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, launched yesterday an appeal requesting for a $46-million (P2.27 billion at $1:P49.34) funding to help the victims get back on their feet.
The UN yesterday appealed to the international community as well as nongovernmental organizations and private sectors to help the government in its continuing emergency relief work and rehabilitation assistance to the almost eight million individuals who were affected by four typhoons — "Milenyo," "Paeng," "Reming" and "Seniang" — that hit the country in the past four months.
A new tropical storm, "Trami," was threatening the Philippines on Monday amid fears it could change direction over the Pacific Ocean and hit the north of the country later this week. The storm’s current path shows it is heading towards Taiwan. (See related story.)
The financial appeal will address the cumulative impact of the recurrent disasters.
