hi. i was wondering if i could have some advice

someone sent me an e-mail with a virus and copied my password to purchase a new mobile phone worth £300 using my Paypal account. The money was then taken from my credit card. the criminal even changed my account delievery address so the phone would be sent to him.

i reported it the day the transaction was made and pay pal said they would investigate and limit my account. i contacted the bank to report the incident.

i have not heard anything back yet.


will i be liable to pay for this £300 phone or am i insured?

Keep on to your card issuer, IMHO the merchant who accepted the payment would ultimately be liable.

Don't forget your bank who issued the card can stop payments if things get really bad. Depending on what bank you're with they can pick up fraud. Braclays have called me quite a few times but its always been a false alarm thankfully

As newbie said, you need to keep on calling your card issuer. You will not be liable for it, and hopefully the guy with his new cell phone will be penalized somehow. I almost fell for one of those tricks before as well. Always be sure to check the address bar that it takes you too. Last time the address said ebay but at .rus

Ouch...online money transfers are just not seeming so safe anymore. I've been hearing more and more about incidents like this

even i have faced this problem, i got a mail in my mail box subject was, "Changes in PayPal Account. please reset your password". i was about to click on the link somehow i opened my paypal account and checked if the account password needs to rechecked/reset. it worked perfectly fine. then i opened a new paypal account and i clicked on the link in the mailbox. i reset my account, i received a message that attempt to withdraw $300 was made from my new account. but that account didn't have any money.
so please be careful, and do not believe any such mails. check your PayPal account first before clicking on any such links. when i inquired i found the most common such mails are generally in French or Spanish. i am using a good internet anti virus. if i try to open such mails it warns me.

I don't this you should be charged by your bank, and from the outcome of the investigation - Pay pal should stop all transaction on your account and reimburse you. Make sure you change all details and try and work back on who you've had transactions in the past.

These 'spoof' emails are almost always general, meaning they never say your name.

Also, you'll find that they will refund you the money.

If you go to your bank for a charge back without giving Paypal enough time to investigate and sort it out you will inevitably loose your Paypal account and you will not be able to sign up for a new one again.
