Default Diversified Investment Portfolio

I've heard people talk about the need for a Diversified Investment Portfolio.

What do you believe a diversified portfolio should include?

Thanks - do you believe there is an additional need to include land or property?

Not sure about need - but I figure it's simply the case of spreading eggs across different baskets.

Not sure if land or property are good buys at the moment.

Diversified is simply that - spreading risk. By keeping as diverse a portfolio as possible you may miss out on the biggest opportunities, but you'll also minimise the risks, which for long term trading is probably the better option for most people.

Look at the markets recently - equities surged, then dropped, which oil has risen and stayed. A portfolio with both equities and commodoties would probably be able to reap some benefits, while an equities-only portfolio could be feeling sore. And a commodoties-only portfolio would have been just plain lucky - but also exposed to serious market uncertainties, and risks.

I believe that we also have to keep ourselves informed. Perhaps, not only a diversity portfolio but to keep track of latest market trends.
