As for the question - I think your big problem is that you don't have an investment strategy in place. It would be much more ideal to read up on investing - maybe read the Dummies Guide to Investing (UK version) and at least get an idea of the different areas open to you.
Additionally, you need to determine your goals - are you planning to leave the cash for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 years? What is it going to be used for? Begin to answer that question, and you can begin to look at the options you researched much better IMO.
