I was charged a hell of a lot more than I was led to believe i would be when using my credit card abroad. They're don't make these things clear enough to the customer!

The exchange rates are outrages when you see you credit card statement. Next time get more cash, use credit card only if you have to.

I think the Abbey Zero still offers charge free usage abroad, if you can still get it.

I have always had a nationwide basic account that I use just for holidays abroad as they do not charge you. Thinking about it though last year I only went to Scarborough so there may be better options now!

Sadly most of them.

The ones that are free to use abroad are:

Post Office
Nationwide (Europe Only now)
Santander

This article does the rounds every Easter and Summer normally written by one of the Consumer Finance Websites.

Yes, it's always better to shop in cash than credit card to avoid a whole lot of fees. That'd be a worry-free shopping spree.
