Default Mortgage Brokers

Having been in a nightmare situation a few years ago with a broker I am a little cautious. The broker I am using now says he is an appointed representative and he has a principal but the lender he has advised me to use is not on the Principal's package of lenders. Is that ok, and will I still be protected by FSA if the broker goes direct to the lender that's not on the panel?
