Negative equity should not concern people which are not planning to move. Yes it is not exactly a plesant though, but you are in the property, it is your home and at some point house prices will pick up.However if someone was planning to move, it may prove difficult.

You're right - I'm steeled for potential negative equity, but not too worried as I can't see a scenario of selling during a downturn. The lesson is always to never sell in a downturn!
