Default Rental Cars

I've heard conflicting things about whether you should take the extra collision insurance when you rent a car. Assuming you're covered for collision in your own auto policy, does anyone know whether you should pay for the added coverage?

I'm afraid I'm not aware of the issue - but it does sound like a very good idea to ensure that you know what sort of insurance coverage you do have when renting.

it differs per car rental company, with some companies you're automatically insured but always check the terms and conditions. And make sure that youre not just covered for collisions either. I rented a car with Hertz, the cra broke down on my holiday, a mechanice came out after 3 days lost, he said it wasnt my fault, Hertz made me pay 400 quid anyway. be careful.

If your insurance comapny covers you for collisions on rentals, why pay for more? Check with your auto insurance company before you rent.

I think it is critically about the type of insurance.

Specifically, my car insurance is for my car and named drivers, so it would not cover me for a rental car. My expectation is that rental service would provide this insurance.

I always take the collision insurance when I rent a car. It isn't that expensive, and that way it leaves my regular insurance out of it in case of a collision. I figure the expense is worth it to keep my premiums on my regular insurance from going any higher than they already are.

I've always thought that when renting a car, all kinds of insurance are already included and so there is no need to worry about any collision or any kind of accident. I think there is really a need to have one if it's not included in the rent.

The rental companies do have insurance on the car. However, if you buy your name into their insurance, then your personal insurance is not held liable for any accident and thew will not up your premiums. However, if the accident is your fault, then you will get a ticket and your insurance will find out anyway. I think I would prefer to take my chances on not taking out extra insurance.

wow...that's nasty... yeah, we really have to double check what deals cover us. even if it is merely a one way car rental, anything can happen...
