Default Spammer

I see a new poster spamming around in her/his posts.

Can anything be done about this?

Sorry about that - just moved house, then my ISP couldn't connect me to broadband. Been an awful pain but I'm around again now, and also made a few tweaks to help defeat the spammers.

And some spammers try to play the smart-guy posting "copy and paste" articles from elsewhere to disguise their spammy links.

That is terrible. Why would someone do that? It's as if it's some kind of bot or something.

People usually do it to increase their ranking in the search engines. They figure that by having more links back to their site they will rank higher... and then they get banned.

You know actually, on further consideration, if you want to stop the spammers the best ways are:

1. Prevent signature links until a user has a minimum of 10 posts.
2. Captcha and email verification for new users.
3. Make all links nofollow from users' posts and signatures.

Just as an example you have a new user today here: financemarkets.co.uk/boards/members/5325.html

Check out their signature...I highly doubt you'll see them post anything!

Member profiles are actually hidden from non-registered members. In other words, no search engine is able to find any profile, so any attempt to profile spam the site won't work.
