Default US bank account for non-US residents

Is there a way that a non-US resident like me can get a US bank account with an ATM card?

I don't know if there is, but I was chatting to the HSBC Premier banking service, and they seemed to think there should be no problem at least getting a US bank account. Whether you could actually use a ATM card with it I'm really not sure.

I remember asking at Barclays a few years back about something similar, and they did offer a USD bank account, but I'm not sure if that was tied to the UK or not.

Hope that helps at least a little.

Thanks for that, Brian, it gives me hope. I actually have a HSBC credit card now and I am wondering that if I open a bank account with them, would I be able to get a US bank account? If this could be possible, there usually is an ATM card that I can use to withdraw my funds. I will call up HSBC office.

Thanks again and more power to financemarkets forum!

Barclays is another one with strong overseas presence - I know they used to offer dollar accounts as well. Might be worth checking them out.
