Default What shall i do??

Hi

I am new to the forum and investing but i need to start asap. I have tried shares but had my fingers burnt every time. I would like something that invests monthly upto £200/month. I dont mind taking some risk as saving in a bank or building society bores me. I have 2 saving schemes going in funds but are very new. I just fancied something exciting that i could follow and hopefully big returns. Has anybody got any ideas or thoughts.

Thanks for your time reading this and i hope to hear from you all

Best regards

Jason

To be honest, if you're looking at investing, then if you wait for the current turmoil in the financial markets to calm down then you could be looking at a lot of bargain stocks.

For example, I'm poised to invest in the UK banking sector on the grounds that RBS, HBOS, and Lloyds and Barclays are all at historical lows by way of past performance. Once the banking sector shows the start of a solid uptrend, I'll be pushing cash into them.

However, it's very important to have an idea of investing goals before doing so - for example, even with an uptrend, banking stocks may still show volatility, so I'll be looking a few years down the line, rather than worry about short-term trends, just so long as the long-term trend is up.

2c.

And welcome to the forums.

Rusty rat, I'd be very carefull about what london guy offers, it appears he is trying some kind of gambling scheme and I can't help but wonder why, if it is so effective, he needs investment.

Hi Rusty

I would suggest that as you plan investing monthly you will overcome alot of the current volatility, and as it is impossible to try and time the bottom of the markets you will hopefully, get at least some of your money in at the bottom of the cycle.

Have a look at using ETF's these are investments that trade like a share but allow you to buy an entire market/index with that one trade- eg the ftse 100 or the S&P 500 or the UK property market etc. or more specific areas like a specific commodity or a specific sector eg-financial or drug companies etc.

If you don't already use it you can buy these through an ISA allowance.
I use TD Waterhouse as my broker to buy these personally.
I also use them for the core of alot of my clients portfolios and pensions etc.

Regards

Christian

Damn, looks like we lost the opportunity with A&L now that there's an apparent bid from Santander:
BBC NEWS | Business | Santander makes A&L bid approach

A&L are up 50% this morning.

Interestingly enough, though, A&L describe talks rather than a formal offer, and no certainty of a deal going through. No word from Santander.

I'm tempted to think the announcement is slightly fishy - and that A&L are just trying to boost share price temporarily. After all, the share price is now above Santander's supposed offer price (varies between 299 and 317 between reports) which might actually damage a take over bid.

Will be watching this one with interest.

Okay, it was just the reporting sparse on details - looks like it's definitely going through.

The different in share price being reported was because AL holds are being offered 299 per share, plus 18 in dividends, totalling 317.

Still, plenty of other banking stocks to watch.
