Default Where to learn about investing?

I'd like to learn more about investing by myself. How do I play the stock market on my own or is there a special way to do it?

If you want to learn about investing, you really need a broker to work with on your real investments.

While you're doing that, though, you could always look into setting up trading accounts - there are lots to choose from, and they can offer you demos which allow you to trade without risking any real cash.

If you're serious about this, it can be a long learning curve, and you really ought to be watching your accounts on a daily basis. Probably even better to start with a couple and place a dozen companies stocks in each - and generally play with the system - do research, read charts and histories, and generally try and have fun with it *before* you risk playing with your own money for real.

Anyway, hope that helps, and welcome to FM, maggie.

Here's a nice slug from the KirkReport:

Over the years, I've met and have become friends with some of the most successful traders in the world. And, I will tell you a little secret - none of these successful people have ever relied on others for stock picks or investment advice to make their fortunes. All successful investors and traders must discover that you have to make your own fortune in the market.

The good news is that each and every one of you have the power and opportunity to do so, providing that you're also willing to accept the responsibility that necessarily entails. To find success in the market, you must understand, know, and fully appreciate the fact that you must develop your own strategy and approach to the market.

try some fake money investing progs online and see how you fare. Take it in one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question when money's concerned.

I tried the GCI site - didn't like the interface so never really played with it much, but boy, and all I've succeeded in doing is getting signed up to their daily newsletter.

Don't forget your local library. There are tons of books on investing that you can check out for free. You can use the books to help walk you through "fake" investing until you feel more comfortable.

Something that I found useful was a review of the profiles and strategies of investment gurus such as Warren Buffet

There are lots of information everywhere but suggest you see an expert on this aside from reading the net and books. It is better to have somebody to talk to so that all questions are answered and clarified right away. BTW, joining this type of forum will also help you a lot.
