Well, bonds are traditionally among the lowest risk investment vehicles around - especially government bonds as opposed to company bonds.
However, bonds are very much long-term "safe" vehicles, and although do have less inherent risk than other investment options, some degree of risk remains nonetheless (government defaulting on payments, for example).
Go with AAA tax-free municipals (if you are in America, of course). These bonds are safe, insured, and provide a competitive return. They are the best choice for any bond aspect of your portfolio.
One example of a more "fun" bond would be the premium bond. They don't lose value as they are guaranteed by Her Majesty. And while you don't earn any interest you stand the chance of "winning" a larger cash prize.
