I understand they pay people to answer telephone calls and I understand that most enquiries can be answered over the phone. but if you want to make specific enquiries it would be a lot easier to E-mail them, surely?

You'd think so, but a lot of companies still have problems dealing with email support.

If I recall, Direct Line started as a phone-based only insurer anyway, so perhaps they feel their support mechanisms are optimum in this area?
