Official figures show that the number of US workers filing new claims for jobless benefits last week fell for the second consecutive week to the lowest level since January.
The figures show that claims for state unemployment insurance fell to 502,000 in the week ended November 7, down from the revised 514,000 the previous week.

The US economy has surprised analysts again, this time by announcing a dip in retail sales for the month of July.
The fall of 0.1% for July follows two months of gains, according to the Commerce Department.
Analysts described the figures as disappointing as they had been expecting a rise of 0.7% in overall sales last month.

Official figures from the US Labor Department revealed today that 651,000 jobs were lost in February in the US, taking the jobless rate 8.1% - the highest level since December 1983.
Meanwhile, the organisation adjusted its January figures upwards to 655,000, while December’s losses were revised to 681,000 - the biggest single monthly decline since October 1949.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have revealed that the number claiming unemployment benefit in Ireland reached the highest monthly level on record in January.
The CSO said 326,100 people made unemployment claims in January, up from 293,100 in December.
Meanwhile, the CSO said the unemployment rate increased to 9.2% in January compared with a rate of 8.3% in December.

The Government is improving the help available for homeowners facing mortgage arrears, and ultimately repossession, because they have lost their jobs.

Official figures have revealed that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits soared by 20,100 last month to 846,700 - the biggest increase since Britain’s last recession in 1992.
In the three months to June, the number of people out of work increased by 60,000 to 1.67 million, pushing the official unemployment rate up 0.2% to 5.4%.
