New mortgage lending could fall below zero
The British Bankers' Association has published figures for mortgage lending in October, showing a monthly 3% rise in the total value of mortgage approvals, to £11.9 billion. Total lending was, however, 38.2% lower than during October of last year. Net mortgage lending down 98%
Latest figures from the Bank of England show that mortgage lending in the UK effectively collapsed in August. Mortgage advances were at their lowest level for six years totalling just £19.19 billion. However, net lending, which takes into account repayments and redemptions, fell 98% year-on-year to £143 million, the lowest level since the Bank's records began in 1993.
