Home buyers needed to use less of their income to cover their mortgage interest in November than at any time for more than five years, the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has reported.

Latest Bank of England statistics indicate that the recovery of the UK housing market is being maintained, with the number of mortgages approved for house purchases rising to 60,518 in November 2009 (October 57,718).

Nationwide has published the first of the November 2009 house price surveys, claiming that the average cost of a UK home rose 0.5% during the month, to £162,764.
