Noisy neighbours plague three million Brits

Which? has been examining the problem of noisy neighbours and claims that at least three million UK adults are badly affected by decibels emanating from next door.

According to research by the consumer group, loud voices and arguments proved a source of aggravation to 58% of respondents, followed by playing music or watching the television with the volume turned up (40%).

Twenty-five per cent of those questioned said they were disturbed by door slamming, while 15% were forced to endure regular parties and 3% the audible expressions of bedroom activities.

Heavy footfall, pets, DIY, musical instruments and ball games were also making life a misery for some.

However, 36% of respondents suffered in silence and only a quarter contacted their local authority to report the nuisance.

Today marks the beginning of Noise Action Week, an annual event organised by charity Environmental Protection UK, which aims to raise awareness of the problems caused by neighbour noise and the solutions available to sufferers.
