Citigroup gives $1m to microfinance in Haiti

Citigroup has pledged $1 million in grants to local microfinance groups across Haiti.

The money will be distributed via three microfinance providers, and will help to rebuild the country’s microfinance industry,

The industry, together with the rest of the country, was devastated by the January earthquake in Leogane.

SOGESOL, Fonkoze and FINCA Haiti will use the grant money to help Haiti develop economically and to create jobs.

The grants will be used for the micro-entrepreneurs whose business was most damaged by the earthquake.

This $1 million pledge completes the $2 million in charitable aid promised to Haiti by Citigroup after the earthquake.

“Our commitment to the people of Haiti is stronger than ever,” said Vikran Pandit, Citigroup CEO.

“We are proud to support leading local microfinance organizations, such as FINCA, Sogesol and Fonkoze, to help contribute to Haiti’s economic recovery and empower those most in need.”
