Private sector job vacancies up in January

Better than expected growth in private sector jobs has been reported in January - according to the Reed Job Index.

The Index was established in December 2009 to measure the strength of vacancies by Reed - one of the UK’s largest recruitment agencies.

The Index saw a rise of 9 points in January to 113 - the highest ever as employer demand recovered from the big freeze last month and the slow Christmas period.

However, salaries were flat, said Reed, down by 1% in real terms since December 2009 and further lagging behind inflation.

According to Martin Warnes, managing director of, January’s figures suggest confidence among private sector employers is growing, adding this is “encouraging news for the UK economy.”
