Sainsbury’s reports strong sales despite challenging environment

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has today said like-for-like sales in the 12 weeks to 11 June rose 1.9%, benefiting from the warm weather and the Royal Wedding in April.

However, the results were less than forecasts for a 2.1% rise but better than rival Tesco’s 1% rise.

Sainsbury’s said sales growth was “solid” in a “tough consumer environment”, adding that sales of clothing and non-food items outperformed sales of food.

The supermarket, which is the UK’s second largest, echoed Tesco’s comments, highlighting that consumers are being squeezed by higher petrol prices and the Government’s austerity measures.

Commenting on today’s results, Justin King, chief executive, said: “The market environment remains very competitive, reflecting the challenging economic backdrop. We expect this to be the case throughout the year.”
