Default Bank charges?

Just a quick question, if anyone has any advice. A friend of mine owed £600 to Nat West but due to bank charges the figure rose to £2300. He has refused to pay back the £1700 but debt companies continue to hound him. Has he a legal leg to stand on? Are these charges illegal? Or should he just cough up?

Hi I am ronald.I think its illegal action. In my view you have to raise your voice against those unnecessary charges.
